This is a motor driven pump with an impeller. It has actual bearings supporting the impeller shaft. A good little pond pump with just the right amount of flow.

I use these pumps to circulate water in my landscape fountain which is an application that it is neither designed nor intended for. I also use this same pump in my sailboat which it is intended for and it works perfectly.The reason I point this out is because a fountain is an absolute torture test for these pumps. No bilge pump is designed to run continuously for weeks or months. They are only intended to run for a few days to buy time to allow a boat owner to find and stop a leak in the hull in order to prevent his boat from sinking. I use bilge pumps in my fountain because they run directly off of a 12v solar panel, they move a lot of water (at a low head of only 2 feet) and they are relatively inexpensive. I specifically use Rule bilge pumps because after working for several years at a marine supply store I have tried every major brand of bilge pump in my fountain and have discovered that the Rule pumps will last between 2 and 10 times longer than any other brand of pump. The bearings are better. The motors are better. The cooling is better. These pumps are quite simply the toughest, most reliable pumps that you can get in this price range. On average I get 9 to 10 months of daily use in my fountain whereas the next best pump will die after just 3-1/2 months. Several other brands died in less than a month. And yes, I tear the dead pumps apart to see why they failed and ensure that the pump wasn't just a one-off manufacturing defect.So if you are considering buying a bilge pump for your boat then spend the extra dollar or two and make sure that you put a Rule pump in. Your peace of mind will thank you. I highly recommend this pump.
