These vacuum hoses are what allows the fuel pump to draw fuel. The environment in which these operate combines both engine heat as well as uv exposure from being outdoors. My tractor lives partially exposed to the elements parked where it is. The material these hoses are made of gives them a very finite lifespan. The rubber tends to crack and split, making the engine unable to draw vacuum, and therefore, fuel. The cracks can be so small that they are imperceptable upon inspection. This can lead to misdiagnosing the fuel pump as being at fault. I have established a procedure of using vinyl electrical tape (3m 33) to wrapping the full length of the hose prior to installation. By overlapping the wraps by at least half, it effectively prevents uv rays from deteriorating the hose, as well as sealing any cracks that may occur from the engine heat degrading the hose.By following this procedure, it has substantially increased the life of this hose, and kept my tractor operating at it's peak.
