Our first purchase of Brio consisted of a large play-set found at a flea-market for 15€, this included 5 small points and 1 large one, among other pieces. Back in my day (80's), all Brio rail pieces were made completely of wood, including the 'Male' connectors on points and other track pieces. Sadly, by the time they made the set we bought, which is a good 10-15 years old, the large points now use plastic for this part of the connection to the next rail. So, when our young child decided to re-configure her track layout, but made the connections too tightly, one of these quickly snapped. Of course I can glue it back together, but it won't be as strong and will inevitably break again. Rather than pay 15€ for two large points to replace it, we bought this pack, which for just under twice the price, comes with said points and a bunch of other useful track pieces. Of course the same design flaw exists (uniquely) for the points which are included. Why am I making a big deal about this change?, well my understanding of manufacturing tells me it can not be cheaper to make these using Plastic as opposed to using wood, since the latter would be cut from a single piece of wood. Even if the material was cheaper to use, by having to then join two pieces together, this would be more expensive to manufacture. So I rather get the feeling, the only reason you would make this change, is because you deliberately wanted to make the pieces more likely to break, so parents would then have to buy more replacements. Given these pieces aren't sold individually, you end up buying packs you otherwise wouldn't and Brio make more money. But this ignores something, broken pieces = sad children, is the pursuit of profit really so important that Brio would overlook this? Heck, let's say I am wrong and it is more costly to make them out of a single piece of wood, charge me a few Euro's more and do it properly, no one buying this stuff is hunting for bargains, this is a premium priced product, make it properly. Kids break stuff, you have to make stuff for kids to a higher standard. For the most part, Brio is of high quality, but in this specific area they have in my opinion made a mistake and I am annoyed by it. Since I frankly am just awaiting the day another such piece inevitably gets broken and my child is upset that one of her favourite toys isn't as complete as it was the day before. So yeah, rant about the points aside, the overall pack is decent value for money and of the usual Brio quality. We bought a second play-set new with a figure-8 setup, two add-on packs including this one and an additional 8 long straight section, so 70€ of additional track not including the two base sets. But altogether this means our railway spans many branch lines and half of our child's bedroom, not bad in the grand scheme of things. Just wish they made the points the old way, in fact I am looking to track down second hand equivalents that don't have the flaw of the modern ones.
