This is a nice low profile Arca-Swiss dovetail L-bracket with a slotted base-plate which allows you to fit it to many different camera bodies by adjusting the slot the attachment screw fits into. I own several expensive L-plates from Really Right Stuff and Kirk and was getting tired of how large these brackets were becoming in order for the remote cables and HDMI ports to be usable while using the bracket. If you HAVE to have access to the ports on the left side of the camera while shooting then this L-plate is not for you. If you don't mind using the self-timer to release the shutter or, in my case, are using a Nikon where the release port is located in the front (Thank You Nikon) such as the D700, D3, D4, or D800 etc then this is a wonderful plate. I love how low-profile it is, you can leave the plate on the camera (I use it on a Nikon D700) all the time and it doesn't get in the way. It also doesn't block the battery compartment, but I think it would be a bit small if using it on a larger camera such as a D4 or a body with a battery grip. I used it with a Markins head as well as a Kirk BH-1 Ballhead and it worked perfectly. There are two sharp edges that need to be filed down where the plate makes a 90 degree turn, but other than that it's good to go. The finish is top shelf as well. I will probably order another one before they disappear, they are that nice. It's not a surprise there are no negative reviews of this product.

DISAPPOINTING - This Desmond "L" plate for $40.00 is only so so, (compared to the $12.00 Docooler® Universal MPU100 Quick Release L Plate). Personally, I DO NOT think it's worth the extra $28.00. OK, here's my assessment of them both:1. THE DOCOLLER BRACKET: I first bought the $12.00 plate because it was cheap. After I tried it out I decided that having a safety stop screw at only one end of the dovetails might be a bit dangerous (danger of having a camera slide out). In every other way it worked just fine. The dovetails fit every one of my Arca/Bogan clamps. By mounting the vertical component on the left side of my Nikon D600 camera and leaving a bit of a gap between the plate and the left side of the camera I was able to access the Mini USB port, without removing the "L" bracket. The bracket is sturdy and well made............ Still, not having safety stop screws at BOTH ends of the tracks troubled me.2. Seeing that the Desmond "L" Plate had safety stop screws at BOTH ends of the dovetail I decided to buy it.THE PROBLEM - No matter how much you fiddle with the mounting there is no way to access the Mini USB port, for downloading your photos, without removing the bracket completely. (A real pain, since you have to find the Allen wrench (supplied) to effect this.3. I'm just a weekend photographer and I see no reason to pay $135.00 (and upwards) for a dedicated "L" bracket that may or may not work any better. If I were a super serious amateur or a pro? Sure, I would spend the money. But the (Docooler® Universal MPU100 Quick Release L Plate) works just fine for the occasional times I need one. I just have to pay attention to watch that my camera doesn't slide out of the clamp. Bottom line? I plan to send this one back and keep the $12.00 one.iF YOU HAVE THE MONEY TO SPEND - By all means, buy one of the "high end" brackets that are specifically engineered to fit your camera. After all, you spend upwards of $3,000.00 for a great camera and lens, you certainly don't want to dump it on a concrete floor.I hope this review helps you.

In short, this is a fine product for cameras that it fits well. I have tested this item on four different cameras and several different tripods. First I will note that it appears well made and had a descent finish about it. I tried it on a Nikon D600 and it is a bit small on the bottom where it screws in to the camera body, but it will work, though a bit tight where Nikon places the mounting on the D600. As a result, access to the left side of the camera is restricted and a wired cable release cannot be used. It fits fine on a D5000 - though it blocks the fold down mirror - tried it on a friend's D3200 for giggles, and a Nikon 1 V1(where I now use it regularly), So it is probably the right size for mirrorless and the smaller consumer DSLR cameras. I have three different Arca-Style tripod heads - all different brands - and the one I received fits fine on all three. Just doesn't fit a number of larger size camera bodies that need to access the left side for access to various ports. Still quite a bargain for a very functional and useful L-Plate. However, if you are going to buy a $2000+ DSLR like a D600 or a 5D amongst many others, buying a good L-Bracket that is made for the camera by companies like Kirk, RRS or SUNWAYFOTO is a good and rather inexpensive investment.

I recently purchased the Sony A7R (through Amazon) and I was looking for an acra-swiss compatible L-Bracket. These cameras are so new that options are somewhat limited at present (as of Dec. 2013). I bought the Desmond L Plate DAL-1 on a whim, since the item is so reasonably priced (by L-Bracket standards). I was pleasantly surprised when I put the bracket on the camera, it's a nearly perfect fit. The bottom doesn't obstruct access to the battery compartment at all (that was my main concern), and the top of the `L' vertical portion lines up with the shoulder of the camera. The fit and finish is excellent, and it looks right at home on the A7R or A7.BONUS: the bolt that inserts into the bottom of the camera mount is adjustable (it came be moved along the horizontal axis), so it is possible to make room to access the mic/headphone/HDMI/USB ports along the left side of the A7R.I have the Really Right Stuff L-Bracket on order, but it won't be available until mid-to-late January, at the earliest. And that item costs a wallet busting $175 (!). Of course, the RRS bracket is custom fit for the A7R and A7, and the quality is exceptional. But the Desmond L Plate DAL-1 is a good solution while waiting for the RRS bracket. It's actually a good solution for someone wanting a good bracket for these cameras, but not wanting to break the bank. Highly recommend.
