I am using this in a VW Lupo GTI - this car is notoriously difficult to hard wire a dashcam into, with the only viable option being to splice into the headlight switch wires. This, is the ideal alternative to invasive wore-tapping, taking power form the OBD2 port and starting up upon ignition. The dashcam boots up and off you go. I'm surprised I have never hear of this before, because it works brilliantly, is totally non-intrusive, and is even switched, so the things you attached tot he USB outlet are really only limited by your imagination. It;s great value too. Excellent.

This short adaptor lead offers a way to power accessories from the car's battery without the need to go through the ignition switch. This could be particularly useful where the lighter socket is not continuously powered and no power outlet or accessory connector are provided or accessible. The large multi-pin plug connects to the OBDII data connector found in most post-1997 vehicles. The location of this socket varies, but it is usually accessible from the driver's seat. I assume the connector has wiring only to the always-on 12 volt positive pin (number 16), and to one of the earth pins (4 or 5), and there will be no danger of interfering with the data pins. On my Jeep, the supply seems to be via a 20 amp fuse, which will limit the power available to 240 Watts, more then enough for most accessories and dash cams. The lead is quite short, and in my case, would need to be fixed under the dash to avoid snags. Other cars may present different issues. But it seems to be well-made, and it works well (note that there is an inline on/off switch), and has the potential to solve many problems. Good value at £10.99 delivered.
