Over the years, I have purchased many ski back packs. All of them high quality, but none of them perfect for big mountain resort skiing (Jackson Hole, Vail, Whistler, Killington, Tremblant….). In almost all cases, the packs were too big, bulky, or just too many straps to be used on chairlifts without taking them off. When riding a chair, straps can sometimes get caught on the chair itself, leading to problems disembarking. This can get pretty dangerous.The Ortovox Trace is lightweight and has a clean design, with no external straps. There is nothing to get caught. The pack is small enough that you can comfortably keep it on when riding a chair without security issues.The pack is very well designed. If you need to pack avalanche gear, it is designed to carry your shovel and poles. Access to the main compartment is through the back, which is what you want when you are on the hill. Need to alert someone, it has a whistle. If for some reason you need to take off your helmet, it can can carry a helmet easily. A place for a wallet and keys; yup - a zippered pocket.When skiing, you don’t even feel that it is present if you pack prudently.Every detail of the pack was careful designed. It is a minimalist design, yet, it does everything a pack should do.
