i gave 5 stars as its good steel, properly hardened and tempered - the forging is well done and in general the grinding is fine, the gland nut was perfectly fitted and the blades protected with grease - BUT!!! dirty huge burrs along the tops of the final cut profile!!! - these would not effect performance but jst plain detract from the tool. 5 mins with a stone and some fine grit and theyre really nice tinsnips.

Great addition to the EDC bag. Ideal for those small jobs that still need a heavy duty tool, these compliment but not necessary replace the 300’s. It’s not really and either or, as you’re better off for having the two, even if the smaller ones get reached for more often.

When these first arrived I couldn't believe how stiff they were. I thought a little oil and breaking in would do the trick but no, they remained extremely hard to use. So I loosened the nut and that freed the action up nicely. I don't know if they're deliberately shipped that way to keep the blades nice and flush, or even if I was supposed to loosen the bolt at all, but there was no way I could use them otherwise.Anyhow, once I got them working I tried cutting 0.6mm carbon steel - there was a lot slippage but once the initial cut was made they made a nice clean line with a bit of effort, the blades are sharp and strong and made from high quality steel.I recently bought some Stanley Fatmax aviation snips with serrated edges and curved blades and they cut like a dream. However, they do leave a serrated edge and tend to bend the metal on longer cuts so I thought I'd try a slimmer pair of snips. Unfortunately for the type of metal I'm cutting the Gilbow snips just aren't suitable. I'm retrospect I should have bought larger/different ones or simply stuck with the serrated snips because they slip badly and it's quite hard work even with 0.4mm steel.I can't help thinking that the design could be improved, although I realise it's stayed largely unchanged for years and there's reasons why. A tiny section of serrations at the beginning of the blade would help with slippage, a spring would be a nice addition (but considering the stiffness that'd be some spring!) and the handles aren't exactly ergonomic. However, they're old school snips and I'm sure that when I come to use them on more suitable metals I'll appreciate them more - despite my griping they really are extremely well made snips. I'm still going to knock a star off because I think the design could do with a slight update, but if you're in the market for this type of snip the you won't get much better in terms of quality.
